Why did Kakashi kill Rin?

Kakashi killed Rin - haunting Kakashi's footsteps for the rest of his life

Although Kakashi Hatake was able to save Rin after the incident at Stone Village, she was forced to become the host of the Three-Tails. On the way to bring Rin back to the village, the two are ambushed by the Mist ninja, who plot to use Rin to free the Three-Tails in Konoha and destroy the village.
